The Glorious Return

Hello all, it has been far too long since my last post, and recently I have had requests to post again. Therefore, I am announcing my triumphant return to blogging!!! I will not post that often, unless people actually leave comments so I know that they are actually being read.

So, tomorrow I leave for nationals and I am fucking psyched broooooooo's. Going in as the number 2 seed kind of puts alot of pressure on us, especially when we have the returning national champions and world's bronze medalist Shazaam in our pool, along with our sectional/regional/year long rival Peppermint Butt Bomb in our pool. But I'm not gonna be too worried about any of the games, we have a deep team and I'm confident in every player that we have. I just want to get to Florida, relax, have fun, and play some awesome games. Obviously I would love to win it all, or make finals, but I would like to at least make semi finals.

My following goal would be to trade the extra jerseys I bought for some bomb ass ones. I'm going to have to survery the scene every day and see what kind of jerseys are out there. I think the Bhodi ones are pretty cool, so many I'll try for one of those. My final goal is to get completely shit faced (if we don't make finals) in my penguin costume that I bought for Halloween. Then i would like to go out to the beach in the costume and hunt for sharks. Maybe build some sort of spear, go in the water sometime around midnight, while drunk, in a giant foam penguin outfit and hunt for sharks. Sounds like a good idea to me.

This is all Im going to write for now, if I know people are reading I will create more in depth, awesomer posts.

Nearing the end

So regionals has come and gone and I was definately pleased with how well it went. We came out flat early saturday morning against ISUC, and just couldn't really get things going, we got walloped in that game. Then played a pretty easy game against Grinell, which resulted quickly into us punting and putting on a zone that they couldn't do anything against, we win that one easily.

Then we get our next game against Marquette, I've been wanting to play those guys all year long. Their stud Mikail (#8) has some pretty sick throws, and since it was still pretty windy out we ran a box and one on him. Putting our fastest, best defenders on him throughout the game. He made some good throws but our boys shut him down and got him frustrated, with him out of the way the Marquette O really couldn't do much. We win this game by quite a few as well.

Winona State was our next opponent and it seemed like this was gonna be a great game from the start. We started off strong and they bounced back after a timeout and take a lead at half by a few. We keep battling and keep it close throughout the entire second half and we were down 14-11 and scored our O point to make it 14-12. While both teams were on the line the horn blew so the cap would go on after the point, we break them to take it to 14-13 and decide to play it out. We break them again to take it to 14-14 making it universe point. I really didn't want this to be my last college point ever and everyone on the line had their game faces on and was ready to fucking go. They work it down quite a ways then with the help of tight defense they turn it over. I pick it up on the sideline and break io backhand to creature who dishes it to Yossi. I make an upline cut for yossi and huck a backhand to Lane (who only played with one contact in that entire game) who caught it for the win 15-14. I was very happy with how I played that game, I think I threw the last 4 goals for our team. This was also the first time I had ever beaten Winona in my college career. And it meant we play Iowa in the morning who had just lost to the Hodags on universe point!!!

Sunday morning we warm up a little sloppy, but we are all pretty relaxed and not very nervous. We play tight lines at the beginning of the game and go up strong 4-1 on them. They take a timeout and score on O, but they keep running a zone on us which we swiftly just rip apart with scoobers, hammers, high releases and break throws. We give our starters a bit of a rest and let some of the young guns try to get us a break, which they do twice!! And I think we had 3 or 4 freshman on those D lines, I was very impressed with them in that game and all year long. We let up a little and take half 8-7. We get a three point lead later on in the game and just got a little tired at the end and end up losing 14-12. We fought hard but just got a little slow at the end and couldn't pull it out.

So Duluth finished the tournament 5th place, which was a nice change from finishing 15th last year. I'm very proud of this team for the awesome year that we have had, and I'm very thankful for a great group of guys. They opened their arms and welcomed me into their family from the moment I moved up here and I thank them for a great final year of college ultimate.

Sub Zero tryouts started this past weekend and I made the long trek down to the cities. Tryouts were the usual, warmups, few drills, scrimmage in games to 3, run some sprints, then scrimmage some more. I played pretty well, conservative, not alot of turns, ok D. There was alot of wind so it was kind of tough to really see anyone do really well. Sunday was kind of the same way, didn't turn it alot, had one nice huck and a few nice break throws but I didn't take too many risks.

I was talked to by a few captains afterwards telling me that I need to take some more shots downfield, which I understand. I know I'm a conservative player and would rather swing it than to try and force something in, but I understand where they are coming from in wanting me to do this. So, this weekend I plan on throwing downfield more and really trying to show off my throwing ability.

Duluth is coming to an end for me, thanks for the great memories.

Central Regionals 2008

My second regionals in my 5 year college ultimate career. I'm very happy to be going and being able to play with and against, some of the best players in the region. It's bracket play this weekend and we're going in seeded 8th, up against Iowa State in the first round. If we win that game then we make quarterfinals, which was my goal at the beginning of the year. If we make quarters, we play the Hodags, which would be fun considering I have never played them once in my college career. I plan on playing my hardest every game, and leaving everything I've got on the field, this will be my final college tournament and I'd like to leave my college ultimate career feeling good about how I played. I play as hard as I can for my teammates and for myself. I will not be intimidated by whoever guards me and know that I can play with anyone. I will play my ass of on defense and take the most difficult matchup I can. I will value the disc, and not commit turnovers. I am going to play the best tournament of my life.

good luck to all teams this weekend from every region.

Northwoods Sectionals 2k8

Well....it happened, I have my made regionals for the second time in my five year college career and I couldn't be happier. For all of you who play, or played on teams who never even had to worry about making regionals, don't take it for granted. So sectionals happened this past weekend in Maple Plain and here is a brief write up of what transpired....

Game 1: UMD vs St Thomas B

This game was never really going to be a game. UST-B was full of young guys who are new to the game, but at least they have a B team, its good experience for those guys who normally wouldn't get any playing time at sections. This game was under control the whole time and we got to get everyone PT, ended up rolling the game in about 45 minutes, UMD wins 15-0.

Game 2: UMD vs Hot Karls

The Carleton-B team, kind of, there's CUT, GOP, then Hot Karls. We had this game under control as well getting to rest our studs. They have some talent, and you can tell that some of them played on the fall CUT team because the kid who was marking me basically was trying to hug me on the mark and I called foul. I made a comment to him and he replied, "yeah I played on fall CUT they teach you to do that before stall 6". So now I have evidence that CUT tells their players to cheat. Not like I really care anyways. I think they score two points the whole game, after their first point they throw the disc as a blade about 50 feet in the air and let it hit the ground. Their second goal the guy spikes it at Smergs' feet, then throws it in the air. So Smergs, now pissed off, runs back to the line and goes let me score Im spiking the fuck out of it at someone. Smergs goes deep, Jeff puts it to him, and Smergs jumps in the air, catches the disc and immediately whips it at the feet of his trailing defender before he lands hahaha. It should have been a turnover but he argued his way out of it, then some kid on their team started yelling about don't spike it, and I screamed back calling them out on their shitty spikes and was promptly held back by LT. UMD wins 15-2.

Game 3: UMD vs. St Olaf

This was the biggest game of the year for us. St Olaf was the number one seed in our pool and 3 seed overall. We keep the lines tight and play our starting 7 line for alot of the game, Myself, Trosvig, Yossi at handles and Creature, Smergs, Lane and LT as cutters. We come out of the gates hot, easily scoring on O then breaking upwind. They score their O point but then we come back and score ours with ease, then break again going up 4-1. They take a timeout and recoop, and go on a three point run to tie it at 4's. We go up 5-4, they tie it up again, then we run three and take half 8-5. After the half they go on a little run again but we never trailed the entire game. The game was 12-10 with the soft cap on, add one, and we score our O point and win the game 13-10. Taking the one seed in our pool, putting us up against the two seed from pool D, GOP.

Quarters: UMD vs GOP

We have a history with this team, stemming back to last years sections where GOP went winless on Sunday after making semis, losing to UMD in the game to go to regions. And we have played them about 4 or 5 times this year beating them on all occasions. Some times the games tend to get a little chippy between us, and thats what happens at the beginning, and Sean from GOP calls everyone out telling everyone to chill out. I think they were just pissed that we started the game 5-0. We are able to open up the lines a bit and get some other people PT while our starting line gets to rest. We keep our starting line in every downwind point to make sure they are scored, and throw us in on a few D points here and there. But everyone else played their role great and ran off a few breaks on GOP, we eventually win easily 15-7 I think.

SUNDAY

Semis: UMD vs Minnesota

I think our team was kind of intimidated at first about playing a better opponent. We had great open looks for goals, and easy unders on the first few points of the game but we make drops or throws are just a little off and we can't convert. Minnesota goes up 7-0 to start, I think we relax a bit and are down at half 8-3. Once we were at this point we decided to save some of our starters again for our next time, we end up losing this one 6-15. But on a positive note I think we broke Minnesota's O line 4 times.

UMD vs St Johns

I'm already getting bored of writing, so we were in control of this game the entire time and never really let up. Throwing different types of d's at them, and taking their key players out of the game we easily win this one 15-6.

UMD vs Winona State

They come out playing well with their big athletic team. And we come out not playing so well, forcing dumb hucks and breaks rather than taking our time to dump and swing the disc. Fatigue is kind of hitting some of our cutters because silly drops are happening and we just aren't mentally in this game. We lose 5-15 or something like that.

4th place game: UMD vs St Johns

This game was pretty easy, just like the other one and we win 15-8, taking 4th in the section, and breaking seed by one.

It was a great weekend and I look forward to regionals this upcoming weekend. If I were to take a guess I would say we will be seeded somewhere between 9-12.

Day in the life of David Bequette: Part II

These details are written to the best of my knowledge....

4:05pm: More N-blox is played and I am on a roll, winning 19 of 20 games.

5:10pm: Roommates are getting home from class, time to make myself look like I've done something today. Leave my warm domain and pick some things up.

5:20pm: Get on the phone and start calling around, seeing what people are up to tonight, I've got about 12 people lined up to come over.

5:37pm: Getting hungry. Make a tombstone extra cheese pizza, devour it, then drive to the liquor store.

5:59pm: Arrive at Last Chance liquor, walk in and get stared at by the cashier, because I look like I'm 16. Grab my handle of captain and some coke, pay the man, who is still staring me down, then leave the establishment.

6:12pm: Arrive back home, start cleaning up the living room and realize that there is a ton of shit on the floor. Time to break out the vaccum cleaner for the 4th time this year.

6:13pm: Penny gets caught in vaccum cleaner, makes annoying rattling sound.

6:18pm: Cleaned up the entire floor, I had to do this because our friend's dog rascal was gonna come over tonight as well. And when he comes he tends to eat anything left on the ground.

6:20-6:55pm: David's private time.
7:10pm: Basketball time baby, watch some NCAA and have my heart torn out when Xavier loses, but Memphis wins. Drinking also commences.
9:30pm: Friends are over and I am getting drunk, basketball is ending time to find something exciting to do. Drink more.
9:32pm: Rascal finds a Cheeto underneath the couch...crunching ensues for a good minute.
10:20pm: I'm officially drunk. I go to the fridge and get the big bag of ham my grandma gave me on easter, warm it up and start passing it around the room. I take a big hunk in my mouth and wrestle for it with the dog for a minute....dog wins.
11:00pm: We turn on the movie Hook. Dustin Hoffman's a badass, why can't I grow a mustache like that?....or facial hair in general.
12:00am-morning: Hazy at best. Time for new day to begin.
Welcome to my super exciting life up in bum fuck Minnesota.

A day in the life of David Bequette. Part I

Part I
8:15 am: My alarm on my phone goes off, time to wake up for my 9:00 am class. I look at my phone, turn it off, and think to myself "is it really worth it to get up and go? you already have a degree, I think sleeping would suit you better".

8:17 am: Turn on Sportscenter, watch some highlights, fall asleep.

10:21 am: Wake up look at my phone, think, hey it's 10:21 I'm supposed to be in my other class right now, well it's too late for that I'm gonna sleep some more. Continue to sleep through my 11:00 class as well.

12:42 pm: Wake up to greet the day!! Hello day, why are you so bright out? Fix the sheet over my window to block out any sign of life outside my room.

12:45 pm: Lay in bed, watch some more ESPN shows that just reiterate over and over and over. Mike and Mike, Jim Rome, 1st and 10, Around the Horn etc etc (Note, I didn't watch all those shows)

1:30 pm: I have arisen from my bed and moved to the computer chair. Check my UST email, nothing of consequence. Skip checking my UMD email for fear that my spanish teacher has sent me an angry email. Facebook is next, respond to messages, read my wall, snoop some profiles, oh hey so and so put up pictures from spring break...nice bikini pics.

2:08 pm: Still Facebooking, and RSDing, what's with RSD now a days, damn spam ruining everything. Email NIKE, to see if there is anything they can do to stop this nikeshoesshow.com company from spamming. I'm guessing....no.

2:19 pm: Play some N-blox evil addition, and I dominate as usual. I'm getting hungry, but that would force me to leave my comfy, warm domain and enter into the realm of light.

3:00 pm: Ok ok, now I'm getting really lazy. Oh wait, it's Friday who gives a fuck.

3:45 pm: Same old sports shit on tv, I have now heard that Greg Oden played in a pickup game at a health club on 8 different occasions. Is the NCAA on yet? Two more hours. fuck.

4:00 pm: Update the blog, let people finally realize how lazy I am this year, and now I shall attempt to leave the domain, shower, brush the chompers, and find nourishment.

Part II coming later today....

Northwoods Sectionals 2k8

Sectionals is approaching fast, faster than in previous years now that the whole series has been pushed up. Northwoods sectionals will be on April 12,13th this year in Maple Plain. This has been something I have been waiting for, for a long time. I haven't played in the series since my junior year when St. Thomas qualified for Regionals for the first time, last year I was out with the broken wrist. So, I've been waiting for this for a long time. Here is the list of teams I think will be at Sections.

Teams
1) MN-Duluth
2) MN-TC
3) Carleton
4) Winona St.
5) St. Olaf
6) Gustavus
7) St. Thomas
8) Macalester
9) Carleton-GOP
10) Hot Karls
11) St. Johns
12) Hamline
13) Mankato
14) St. Olaf-B
15) St. Thomas-B
16) Random Team

Here is my shot at seeding these teams...

Pool A: CUT, St Thomas, Mankato, Random Team
Pool B: MN-TC, GOP, Gustavus, St Thomas B
Pool C: Winona St, St Johns, Hot Karls, St Olaf B
Pool D: St Olaf, Duluth, Hamline, Macalester

which means the seedings would go as....
1) Cut
2)MN-TC
3) Winona St
4) St Olaf
5)Duluth
6) St Johns
7) GOP
8) St Thomas
9) Mankato
10) Gustavus
11) Hot Karls
12) Hamline
13) Macalester
14) St Olaf B
15) St Thomas B
16) Random Team

Then assuming our section gets six bids, which I wouldn't be surprised if we got 7 since we have a big section that is normally stronger than all the other sections here are my picks for regionals...

1) CUT
2) MN-TC
3) Winona St
4) Duluth
5) St Olaf
6) GOP/SJU

These are just my thoughts for now, we'll see what happens in two weeks.
