Winter League/ Duluth Tourney

Last Friday was my first ever winter league game. I've played indoor and everything but not winter league. A few men from Formal Flick (Me, Shawn, Hayword) sported our fancy suit coats during pregame warmups and throw around, I definately think that the Lady Zerks were intimidated. However, they did have a pretty strong team and it was a really fun game. They had Truesdale, Schmelze (sp?) Bri Bri, Andrew W.K for their men and then I wasn't sure who their women were but they did pick up Alicia Morrison, who is quite the player. We had Sam, Me, Shawn, Word, Chris, Jimmy for guys and then Tina, Rachel, Solarz and picked up Liz for the women.

I should have wrote this earlier because I don't really remember how it started, but we were trading points early on, and I could really tell that I hadn't been conditioning enough over break. Later on in the game my legs just felt heavy and slow and I need to eliminate that within the next few weeks. Either way, I didn't play terrible and I didn't play great, I guess it was a fairly solid game. I have to get used to throwing to women again, after practicing with St. Thomas again I kinda lost the touch. I led Rachel too far I think twice, one being in the endzone where she caught it but then dropped it deciding that saving her face from the wall was more important. I can't blame her, she was pretty open and I put it out too far in front. I had one really nice forehand huck maybe 50 yards that was on target but then dropped, and one nice lead pass to Shawn where I think I made him run harder then he wanted too haha. That maybe the fastest I have ever seen him run, but we scored. I really like winter league already, and I love playing with all these new people. Moe people always ask me why I'm not playing with their team and to all of them I say this. I played with you guys for 6 months, I loved it, I had a ton of fun and learned a shit load. So, now I want to play with other people/friends I haven't gotten to play with so I can continue to learn new things and improve my game. I still like you all, you're all still my friends, it's just fun to play with different people. Anyways, we ended up losing the game by one I think, maybe 12-11. Highlight of the game for me was "skying" Bri Bri for a D haha if he reads this he knows what I'm talking about.

Duluth Club
Immediately after my winter league game I went home and Joe A. picked me up and we left for Duluth. We stayed at his mom's place where I created a comfortable bed on the floor with like 9 blankets. Got to the fields the next afternoon for pool play. Moe men aka Cake or Death had...Me, Joe, Jake, Tom, Guy, Pat, Feldman, Moss, Shwa, Crotchy and Delaware. First off we played the Gustavus Alumni team who wore all Daunte Culpepper jerseys. It was a fairly easy game with us winning 13-5 or something like that. Our game plan consisted mostly of either hucking big to Mike/Guy/Feldman/Pat or just letting our speedsters run around and get unders. Then we played St. Cloud Lucky Dog, most were all college players still except for Naz and Tiff. We won this one fairly easily as well but I learned that Naz is faster than I orginally anticipated after he repeatedly ran me around the field. Our final game was against Madison Club, I think most were Hodags, maybe one or two alum and one or two Pimpdags. This was our worst played game, obviously due to better defense and just poor decision making and execution. They played well and ran us around eventually winning 13-11.

That night there was a Dank party, got very drunk, Smurgs wandered around the streets lost and barefooted with marker all over his face, Alicia eventually found him and drove him over to Trosvig's place where he then passed out. Good times.
The next day we played Dingwop in the semis and beat them pretty handily. That was a rough game for me because I am pretty confident that I was still drunk for maybe 3/4 of that game. Running while you're drunk is alot more difficult than I remember, I just felt like everything was bobbing up and down, I'll try to not do that again. Finals we met the Hodags again and won this game 13-8 or so, we played alot better and they didn't play as well as they had the previous day. I felt good this game, it's nice to see how I could compare with some Wisconsin players. I felt I played solid O and could get open on them and be able to get off throws fairly easily. It also helped me realize that I still have alot more conditioning and working out to do before sectionals/regionals/zero tryouts.

Instead of going home I decided to pick up with the St. Cloud team for the college tourney. I won't go in detail on this one but it was Me, Smurgs, Jimmy, Quinn, Naz, Garret and Tiff. We had a pretty solid team there, winning our first two games pretty well and then losing to Winona St in our final game. Next morning we beat Hopkins, then forfeited so they could move on and then we wouldn't have to wait until 2:30 to play. Played Mankato in the consolation and boy did they end up hating us. We tried to make Smurgs score every goal in the game, he scored the first 12 goals then they started putting 4 guys deep on him every time so we gave up and let Tiff score the last one, Hopkins boos then followed. A few guys didn't shake our hands or even look at us after the game, ahh well it was fun. Handling with Quinn and Naz was a blast and I can only hope I get to do it more in the future. After the games we went to McDonalds and apparently its a St. Cloud rookie tradition at this tournament where everyone gives the rookie (Me) all their change and then that rookie has to go across the street and buy a porno magazine with that said change and walk it back across the street....Sooo, I had to do that, and Naz had never done it so he came with. $11.81 in quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies later, Naz and I had ourself a porno magazine with bonus DVD. Which he swiftly kept.

Great weekend, alotta fun, thanks Cloud guys for letting me play with you and for those of you who actually read to here I'll post on my next winter league this weekend.

take care,
David
